Johann Gerhard's Sacred Meditations, first published in 1606 when the author was only twenty-two years old, is perhaps his best-known work. This volume is considered a classic of Christian devotion, and has been translated into numerous languages over the last four centuries. While Gerhard is often considered the most influential dogmatician of the Lutheran church, this book demonstrates that he is also among the greatest devotional writers. This book is divided into a series of fifty-one devotions. These short chapters cover a breadth of topics in both theology and the Christian's daily life. He begins with meditations on the cross and repentance, and brings the reader throughout the Christian life, ending with a treatment of the eternal bliss which awaits the saints. I am curious which english translation is used here. Who is the translator, and what year was it published?

I finished the book and am now recommending it to other Christians Lutheran and non Lutheran alike. I was struck by how Gerhardt brings to bear the weight of the law and the gospel, the transcendence and immanence of God, and the eternal reality of salvation and judgement. They definitely don't write books like this anymore.

I recently purchased your edition of “Sacred Meditations.” I appreciate much of what I see of it. However (and I’m sorry to complain), I’m disappointed that roughly two large paragraphs were omitted from the meditation on Chastity right near the beginning, at least in the edition I purchased. A sentence begins, “A certain wise man,” but then totally drops off, and a new paragraph begins. Finding the section online, I found that some really substantive writing was left out. I hope this could be fixed in a future edition.
